People don't realize that Haberstroh's article has been debunked, but here are the facts for anyone that wants to avoid being a victim of fraud: In the 80's and 90's, it was common to have a road trips with 8 games in 13 nights while flying coach, and these tougher road conditions yielded much worse road records than today's teams.. Only 2 teams had road records above .500 in 1988, compared to half the league today (15 teams)... Accordingly, the "normal" home inflation that occurred for everyone in previous eras was due to tougher road conditions and horrible road records compared to today's teams.. So that explains the "normal" inflation, while the massive one-offs of extreme inflation like 88' Jordan, 90' Hakeem or 86' Robertson are likely due to personal issues that affected their home/road performance in that particular year.. In contrast to the logic above, in order to believe Haberstroh's narrative, you must believe that there was a massive conspiracy by record-keepers league-wide to pad everyone's home stats, which is absurd... And there's no reviewing of subjective stats like steals, assists or blocks and then saying the 2nd subjective ruling is somehow better than the first - I'll take the ruling of the original, professional score-keepers than some guy 30 years later with an axe to grind.. The fact that they tried to push a paltry 5-game sample is more evidence of the fraud - I'll have to write a letter to my college stats professor and say "see you were wrong - a sample of 5 is more than sufficient".

As a freshman player, I did stat keeping for varsity basketball. They were furious that I didn't stat-pad for our team. There are extremely specific rules for what counts as an assist, rebound, and who gets a steal. Because we had players who were likely going to play D2 or D3, our PG needed better assist stats. But the rules in HS clearly stated (at least at the time) that the scoring player could only take a certain amount of dribbles before it no longer counted as an assist from the passer. And they wanted me to ignore this. But how fair is that to the teams trying to recruit them? So, I never did. He still averaged like 6-7 assists per game (which is good for HS) but they wanted him to have Stockton numbers. At the HS level, this shit is EVERYWHERE. After one game the PG said, "You cost me a double-double." I didn't cost you shit! My job was to present accurate figures to the newspapers and to the team, so they knew what to work on.
